As part of a West Sussex Wellbeing initiative, residents of Adur and Worthing, who may be at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, are invited to attend a free information session with follow up support offering personalised diet plans.
Type 2 diabetes is commonly linked to a poor diet and obesity. Other factors could be; age (over 40 but over 25 for south Asian people), ethnicity (south Asian, Chinese, African-Caribbean or black African origin even if born in the UK) and genetics - having a close relative with the condition (parent, brother, sister).
If gone untreated, Type 2 diabetes can cause kidney failure, heart disease and even blindness.
Cllr David Simmons Adur Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing said:
“As someone who already has Type 2 diabetes, I can only say that I wished this sort of approach had been available earlier in my life. It's not a question of the future taking care of itself, people at risk should attend these sessions and take every action they can to prevent it. It's in their best interests.”
Cllr Val Turner Worthing Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing adds:
“Type 2 diabetes is a debilitating disease that is on the rise in the UK, but with the right advice and support can be managed and some effects even reversed. This series of information sessions and follow on support is easily available to all in the district, with venues and times to suit. It is a good place to start, for all who think they might be at risk of developing this disease. The Adur & Worthing Wellbeing team and the Wellbeing coaches from Albion in the Community are committed to sharing their expertise in a friendly and informed manner, at these free sessions.”
The information sessions are run during mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. In community venues across the district.
